This detailed set represents the reverse-flow cooling system fitted to Saracens to combat cooling problems encountered in hot climates. However, Saracens fitted with this system saw operation in many theatres including Northern Ireland.
In hot climates, exhaust fumes were being drawn into the crew compartment through the ventilation system. To solve this, a reverse-flow cooling system was introduced. The bonnet covers were redesigned with louvred air intakes, nicknamed "beehives", causing air to be drawn in through the rear, pass through the radiator, and expel downwards and outwards.
However, the new system initially directed hot air out of the front of the vehicle, which could affect nearby personnel when stationary. A metal cowling and rubber deflector were added to redirect the hot air to the sides. This modification upgraded the Saracen Mk.5 to the Mk.6, and the vehicle's rear vertical outlet pipes were removed.
This set is designed to fit the Airfix Saracen Mk5, converting it to a Mk6.
Each set includes;
- 1x bonnet piece with 'beehives' (A1)
- 1x cowling/deflector (A2)
Fitting Instructions;
- Substitute Airfix part G1 with the FoxHopp part A1
- Use Airfix part B20 instead of B19
- Do not fit Airfix partsG9 & G10, instead fill and sand the ends of Airfix part G6
